Every so often, critics come across a singer-songwriter with a voice so pure and magical they can’t help but lumber him with the well-intentioned, yet often-misjudged tribute “The New Jeff Buckley”. Step right up, Mr David Goosey. Whilst I’m reluctant to compare Goosey to Buckley, it is surely only a matter of time until the wider world falls for his undoubted charms. Equally, it is only a matter of time until the (dreaded) B-word rears its beautiful head.
Blessed, as he is, with a fragile voice of astonishing purity; and backed with simple, gentle acoustics; listening to Goosey for the first time is akin to stumbling across a crackly old unmarked tape full of precarious, ramshackle minor-masterpieces. His demo contained such delights as: ‘Missing Pages’ (a stripped-down Ben Christophers-esque affair imbued with an irresistible sense of understated despair) and ‘River Of Salt’ (the sort of song that could well have bubbled-up in Buckley’s head as he dived into the Wolf River still wearing his boots, all those years ago).
However, the aforementioned songs only tell half of the story. The other half? Take a listen to ‘Lucy & The Devil’- his new devilish-love-derived one-man-band concept album. That voice is still there, but, this time it sounds like he’s been snacking on voodoo canapés round at Tom Waits’ dissonant noise bungalow. It’s as twisted as you’d expect a six-act opus about a girl falling in love with the Devil to be, but that only adds to its charms.
A truly special talent to savour.
